Green Cleaning Chemistry for the 21st Century
Like many products on Shark Tank* RCC was born out of necessity. When I realised my detergent was adulerating my wine with the residue it left in my wine glasses, I began searching for a product I could buy that would solve my problem. I also researched other methods of cleaning, going on wine glass washing forums, (Yes they exist!), and seeking advice.
What I found ranged the gamut from complicated to weird. Some methods suggested involved washing with baking soda, rinsing with water, then rinsing with vinegar, rinsing with more water, and then steaming the glasses by holding them inverted over a pot of boiling water. Then letting them drip dry on a rack or a clean tea towel. Wow, a lot of work, There had to be a better way!
Having no experience in chemistry, but with a strong background in research from my years in the film business, I began by contacting chemical manufacturers. I soon found they had technicians who specialized in ingredients for detergents. Taking their advice and stock formulas and requesting samples of ingredients, I began experimenting. I soon found what I didn't want: Funky odors, bitter residues, just what I’d found in all the products I’d purchased.
What I wanted was a formula that was clear, odorless, tasteless, ultra-concentrated, and fragrance-free. I also wanted my formula to be plant-based and biodegradable. 5 I then requested samples of ingredients that could meet these criteria. And still despite the good intentions of many ‘experts’ I got samples that were not what I was looking for, or were synthetic and or petroleum based. Nonetheless I persevered, and many, many ingredients and more than one hundred sample batches later, across two years working part time in my kitchen in my little country cottage, I finally had a formula that worked!
I gave out samples to wine-loving friends, and got back rave reviews. Some thought it too thick, but I wanted it super concentrated. I believe in value for money, and that heavy viscosity means you can wash more glasses with the same volume of detergent.
Many of my friends and the wine professionals I knew urged me to market my formula. I heard from many people, ‘You should sell this!’ That’s how my business was born.
I had other businesses before and I had a list of criteria a new business would need if I ever started one again. The list included everything I had in the formula, and also a product that was a necessity, sustainably produced, and low-tech/]. Low-tech so it couldn’t be made obsolete in six months by a newer technology.I’m pretty confident wine glass washing won’t change in my lifetime.
Now you can purchase the results of those two years of research and 22 years of manufacturing, in a convenient kitchen-sized bottle for forty bucks. Forty bucks, 40! Yes and that will help you wash over 2200 glasses perfectly. Less than 2 cents per washing. \
“Truly a miracle for your glassware! M. Murillo - Chicago
